Overview

Creating Hope
in the Lives of Others.

Community Health Resources (CHR) is a growing, non-profit,
community-based behavioral health agency providing services in Central and
Eastern Connecticut. We’re committed to providing hope to children, adults and
families with mental health and substance use issues.

CHR’s history dates back to the 1960s, starting with a small grant in the town
of Enfield, Connecticut. From that beginning, we’ve grown to become a
well-respected service provider and trusted community resource. Today we offer
more than 80 programs, operate out of 32 locations and employ over 700
dedicated professionals. This means greater access to quality services when and
where they are needed most.

As we anticipate changing needs, we will offer
new programs, recruit exceptional staff, collaborate with other providers, and
explore new funding sources. The driving force of our growth continues to be
meeting the needs of those we serve.

Services Offered

With the right help people can and do live healthier, happier lives.

We often overlook – or don’t understand – the importance of good mental health as a part of a healthy, fulfilling life. Mental illness, substance abuse and emotional issues are just as real as other illnesses – such as cancer or diabetes – and can have a tremendous impact on the individuals and families it touches.

CHR offers a full range of comprehensive behavioral health care to children, adults and families in Central and Eastern Connecticut. We assist individuals in fulfilling their goals by instilling hope and providing services delivered with skill, respect and compassion. With the right help people can and do live healthier, happier lives. To access CHR’s services, make one simple call to our Assessment Center at: 1.877.884.3571 (1.877.88.HELP.1).

Stories of Hope

We Believe in the Power of Recovery.

CHR proudly served over 11,000 children, families and adults in 2012 with the sole mission of providing real solutions to real problems. Some of our clients have been brave enough to share with us their experiences with mental illness, homelessness, addiction and an array of other difficult realities. Our wish is that their stories of perseverance and resilience offer hope to others that there can be light at the end of a dark tunnel.

“The thought of being in a secure environment like this has been nothing but a blessing and has given me hope. I don’t have to remain homeless anymore with no purpose and no direction. I can stick my key in the door and say I’m home. I can put my bags down and unpack because I am going to be here for a while. The people I’ve met at CHR have been nothing but positive influences in my life.”
Steve, a CHR client and resident

“This is a place that I can call my home. No more sleeping in abandoned buildings and dirty hallways. Here I have somebody believing in me, and thanks to CHR, I finally believe in myself.”
Iris, a CHR client and resident

“I had been brought to my knees by my addiction. Through CHR I got the help I needed, and with lots of wonderful therapists, I began to find myself again, one day at a time. Thank you to all of my treatment providers, friends and family who have helped me throughout the years. I made it with a combination of medication, individual and group therapy (any and all that were available), and peer support groups in the community. They all helped me face my fears head on without any sort of anti-anxiety drugs. I wanted to feel every emotion, happy or sad, as it happened during this incredible rebirth of my soul.”
Bill, a CHR client

“...I reached my 41st birthday when I was diagnosed with chronic paranoid schizophrenia. Because I was so sick, I harbored this secret fear that I’d never work again, never financially support myself again, and never regain my place in society. What broke me out of my paranoia? TRUST…first with The Institute of Living, and then with CHR. After coming into CHR’s care, I was placed in CHR Northfield, a group home for the mentally disabled where I lived with seven others, plus staff, who all helped shape my recovery. Today, I am living on my own, I serve on the Enfield Historical Society’s Board of Directors, volunteer at the Food Shelf and serve as a lectern and usher for my church. I’ve come a long way and am proud to say that I am back. Thank you CHR.”
